Parent Notification: Online Learning

In July 2012, legislation was passed to provide online access to all students in the State of Georgia and directed the State Board of Education to “maximize the number of students” who use digital learning in some capacity to complete high school coursework.

Senate Bill 289:  Districts must allow students to take a course offered through the Georgia Virtual School even if the course is offered at the student’s local school.  Online courses can be accessed through the Georgia Virtual School, local virtual courses, or for-profit accredited vendor online schools.

House Bill 175:  The Georgia Online Clearinghouse provides students and parents with information and access to high-quality academic and career-oriented courses aligned to state and national standards through a variety of online providers.  Parents and students can find online courses, online course providers, and research the guidelines for what constitutes high-quality online courses.  To access the information found in the clearinghouse, visit the following website:

The Savannah-Chatham County Public School System currently offers online learning opportunities for students in grades 9 – 12.  The courses are customized for Common Core and are taught by highly qualified instructors in a blended environment.

Prior to registering for any online course, parents are strongly encouraged to work with their child’s School Counselor to ensure course selection aligns with the local graduation requirements, as not all online courses will meet a student’s graduation plan.  Credit for courses taken outside the district or Georgia Virtual School cannot be guaranteed.

Additional Information:  Taking online courses during the school day is subject to the availability of personnel to supervise students and infrastructure, either physically or through technical resources.  Students attending public schools are provided online options at no cost, provided the coursework occurs during their regular school day.  Although these courses are provided to students at no cost during the regular school day, the school system does incur fees.  In the event a student drops one of these courses, the parent must reimburse the district for all costs associated with the course.  If a course is taken outside the regular school day, the parent is responsible for payment for the course.

If a parent chooses to enroll their child full-time in a cyber-academy or cyber-school, the student will no longer be enrolled in SCCPSS and therefore, will not be eligible to participate in any of the services provided by the school district. This includes all music and sports programs.
