Announcements: Second Annual Family Involvement Day Was A Success!

Second Annual Family Involvement Day Was A Success!

After the success of the initial Family Involvement Day in 2015, the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System decided to revamp the event. As a way to recognize the work of the district, the City of Savannah and County Commission proclaimed Saturday, April 9, 2016, as Family Involvement Day.

The school district’s Academic Affairs team delivered an effective parental engagement event called Family Academic Strategy Time (FAST). It was designed to engage students and parents in a way that provides information and answers questions.

Knowing the importance of planning a student’s educational roadmap, district leadership set out to bring parents into the classroom to provide valuable insights on everything from digital learning to college preparation. One of the heavily attended sessions focused on the new Georgia Milestones Assessment, which replaces the CRCT and EOCT this school year. Georgia Milestones will be aligned to the Common Core Georgia Performance Standards (CCGPS) and will require more from students than the previous assessments in order to better prepare them for college and a career.

Parents were able to get an understanding of what the new assessment would look like and how teachers were preparing students for the transition. Students were able to participate in hands-on STEM activities as well as gather college materials. As parents and students continued to learn about school resources, summer programs, and online learning tools, members of the SCCPSS Career Technical Student Organizations (CTSO) were busy planning a Field Day to culminate the FAST event. During the Field Day parents, students, and district staff were able to connect in a family-fun atmosphere that provided games and activities for all.

More than 2,000 were in attendance on the day, making for a very successful venue that is sure to have a positive impact on student performance.
