Announcements: Gadsden and MLK Observance Day Association Literacy Partnership

Gadsden and MLK Observance Day Association Literacy Partnership

Recently, second grade students at Gadsden Elementary School got the opportunity to meet with members of the MLK Observance Day Association. For two days, they came and read to the second grade classes and shared their experiences with the students.

Each student received a copy of the Caldecott Honor Book Martin's Big Words: The Life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by Doreen Rappaport. Deborah Adams, Carolyn Blackshear, Marie Simpson and Evon Wright visited the classrooms and planted seeds of positivity in the students' lives. Through the association's "Readers are Leaders" literacy campaign, the students now have their own gem about an important piece of history.

Students at Gadsden saw what it was like to see community engagements in their classrooms. Hopefully, this initiative will continue across the district. The MLK Observance Day Association was incredibly generous to come and make a difference in our students. Their campaign lines up with K-8 curriculum and encourages students to see the importance of reading. Job well done!
