Title

Jenkins High to Represent SCCPSS at Regional Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl

Body

SCCPSS held its annual Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl competition on January 31, 2017 and Jenkins High School placed first among the schools competing.

2017 Jenkins Reading Bowl Team

The Reading Bowl is a competitive game format where students are questioned about the content of the 20 Georgia Book Award Nominees each year. The Georgia book award began in the Department of Language Education at the University of Georgia’s College of Education and its purpose is to, “to foster a love of reading in the children of Georgia, and to introduce them to books of literary excellence”.

Helen Ruffin, a Library Media Specialist at Sky Haven Elementary School in DeKalb County founded the unique competition called the Reading Bowl in 1986.  Her vision was to have teams, comprised of students from different schools, compete to test their knowledge of the selected books.  It is open to students in grades 4-12 across the state.

Six geographic regions hold competitions.  The team defends its title at the regional competition held at Valdosta State University this Saturday, February 11th
