Islands High School Sweeps Georgia State FFA Veterinary Science Competition for Third Consecutive Year

The third annual FFA Veterinary Science Career Development Event was held last month. 31 teams from across the state competed in the event, which was held at Fort Valley State University Veterinary Science and Public Health Department.

For the contest, students took a written test on veterinary knowledge and an identification test, where they identified various veterinary equipment, animal breeds and parasites. Students also demonstrated skills in both clinical and handling practicums.  In the Junior Division, Islands High School 9th grade team won first place.

Team members were Sarah Baisden (1st place individual winner), Logan Lewis (2nd place individual), Blake Handy, and Sarah Harris. In the Senior Division, Islands High School also placed first.

Team members were Peyton Allen (1st place individual winner), Alyssa Lincoln (2nd place individual), Pierre Johnson, and Hannah Longaberger.

The National FFA Organization started the Veterinary Science event in 2011. This is the third year that a competition has been held in Georgia and the third time that Islands HS has won the event. Islands High School has represented Georgia at the National FFA Veterinary Science CDE in 2016 and 2017. In 2017, the team placed 10th overall.

“I’m incredibly proud of my students and their performance”, says Myria Shipman, Veterinary Science Teacher at Islands High School. “Each year, I raise my expectations and each year, they surpass them. I’m excited to see this team perform at Nationals.”

The senior team will represent Georgia at the National FFA Convention on October 24-27, 2018 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
