Six Savannah Arts Academy Students Awarded Medals in 2018 National Scholastic Art & Writing Awards 

Body

Six Savannah Arts Academy students have been awarded medals in the 2018 National Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Submissions to the competition are juried by leaders in the visual and literary arts, some of whom are past award recipients. Winning entries are those that best exemplify originality, technical skill, and the emergence of a personal voice or vision. The SCCPSS winners are:
 
 
Alexander Durrence; 11th Grade – Silver Medal in Drawing & Illustration for “Star Gazer”/Gold Medal in Drawing & Illustration for “Head in the Clouds”
 
Rachel Laird, 12th Grade – Gold Medal in Drawing & Illustration for “Blue Devil”
 
Kristina Lowry, 11th Grade – Silver Medal in Printmaking for “Masha”
 
Alexia Marshall, 11th Grade – Silver Medal in Design for “Dogs & Cats”
 
Emma Michaels-Giglio – 9th Grade – Silver Medal in Digital Art for “Artificial Intelligence”
 
Emma Traynor – 12th Grade – Gold Medal in Drawing & Illustration for “Boston”
 
The entries for National Medal recognition were those who received Gold Key Awards in the 2018 Georgia Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. At the state level, SAA students received 31 Gold keys, 30 Silver (including a Silver key for an art portfolio), and 37 Honorable mentions. Savannah Arts Academy tied for second in the state with North Gwinnett High School for the most Gold keys.
 
The state exhibition was held at SCAD’s Poetter Hall in Savannah. National Medalists are recognized in part at the National Ceremony at Carnegie Hall in New York City.
