Savannah Arts Academy students Alexis Grasser, Destiny Allen, and Tiana Ruden from won the Dr. William T. Lipscomb Honorable Mention Award at the Science and Engineering Fair held at Savannah State University last month. The students received the award for their project “Testing Barrier Materials to Reduce Saltwater Intrusion into Aquafilters”. They will share a $500 award and receive a certificate. Their teachers are Kristen Sheffield, Elizabeth Stevens, and Dana Barnwell.
Raymond Sears and Tyson Colette from Savannah Arts Academy won the Dr. William T. Lipscomb Engineering Mechanical Award for their project “Dynamo Powered Phone Charger”. Their teachers are Kristen Sheffield, Elizabeth Stevens, and Dana Barnwell. The students shared $500 a check and Award Certificate.
The Dr. William T. Lipscomb Grand Prize Scholarship and Awards are sponsored by the Glynn Environmental Coalition, Georgia Power, and Pinova, and are presented annually to the students whose science projects best epitomize concern and hope for a clean environment and healthy economy for coastal Georgia.
Dr. William T. Lipscomb served as a professor of Biology teaching Anatomy & Physiology at the College in Brunswick until his retirement, and then served as the Glynn Environmental Coalition Secretary until his death thirteen years ago. Dr. Lipscomb was an advocate for the Glynn Environmental Coalition recognizing and supporting area outstanding middle and high school students, teachers, and parents. A science fair award was established in his memory after he passed away and this year will be the 13th year the award is presented.
