Many students from Savannah-Chatham schools participated in the yearly Savannah-Chatham Fair Housing Council Poster Contest sponsored by the City of Savannah and the Savannah Area Board of Realtors.
The poster contest provides an educational opportunity for students to showcase their understanding of fair housing in an artistic way. Many students created entries and wrote essays that reflected the annual theme: “Fair Housing: It’s not an Option, It’s the Law!” Second and third place winners receive cash prizes, and the overall winning entry receives a laptop computer furnished by the Savannah Area Board of Realtors! Members of the council recently visited the Board of Public Education during the June 6, 2012 Board meeting to make a presentation to this year’s winners.

The Savannah-Chatham County Fair Housing Council is a non-profit organization that began in 1994. The mission of the organization is to provide all citizens in Savannah, Chatham and surrounding counties, within constitutional limitations, fair housing services that will result in the protection of equal housing opportunity from discrimination based on race, color, national origin, sex, religion, familial status or disability. Members and staff of the council have taken a leadership role in eradicating housing discrimination in our community. The Council operates two programs—The Education Program and the Enforcement Program—to achieve its goals. Each year, in partnership with the Savannah Area Board of Realtors, the Poster Contest is presented to students and the winners are recognized before the Board of Public Education.
