Title

Woodville Tompkins & First Tee Collaboration Yields Successful Results at SkillsUSA Competition

Body

Three Woodville Tompkins Technical High School students participated in the 48th annual National Leadership and Skills Conference, held in Kansas City, Missouri on June 23-27, 2012.  The conference showcases career and technical education skills. The SkillsUSA Championships is the national-level competition for public high school and college/postsecondary technical students enrolled in career and technical education programs.

Russell Brabham, Rasmine Burris, Bradley Stallings were given the opportunity to display all the work done at the Mary Calder Golf Club Computer Lab.  Students enrolled in the Savannah Tech/Woodville Tompkins dual enrollment Cisco program got a chance to put their networking skills to work for a good cause – installing a Local Area Network (LAN) at The First Tee of Savannah Learning Center at Mary Calder. At the same time, they participated in a community effort brought together to support learning.  All equipment and supplies for the activity were donated and now the center has a full functioning computer network lab.

During the week, more than 5,600 outstanding career and technical education students—all state contest winners competed hands-on in 94 different trade, technical and leadership fields. Students worked against the clock and each other, proving their expertise in occupations like plumbing, computer-aided drafting, precision machining, automotive service technology and broadcast news production. Top student winners received gold, silver and bronze medallions. Many also received prizes such as tools of their trade and/or scholarships to further their careers and education.

The students placed 7th out of the nation’s top ten.  Their advisor, Ms. Stallings accompanied the students.  “This is a huge honor for these students and we are very proud of their accomplishments.”
