Dollars for Disaster Week Kicks Off at West Chatham Middle School

On Monday January 25th, many Savannah Chatham County Public Schools will be doing their part to help others in the 9th annual “Dollars for Disasters Week” to benefit the Savannah American Red Cross.  The campaign, also supported by Domino’s Pizza, runs for one week beginning on January 25th and ending on January 29th, with all funds raised during the week going to help victims of local disasters like home fires. Volunteers are called several times during the week to assist a family in need due to a house fire. Those families are often left with only the clothes on their backs.

“This is an awesome opportunity for the students to give back to the community and help other children like themselves”, said Dr. Quentina Miller-Fields, American Red Cross Board Member, Dollars for Disaster Campaign Chair and Director of Student Affairs.

“We’ve worked with the American Red Cross of Southeast and Coastal Georgia for the past 7 years, and are excited about continuing our involvement to support such an important cause”, said Megan Cagan, Operating Partner for Domino’s in Garden City which is owned by Cowabunga, Inc., the franchise that owns Dominos in Savannah. “We’re excited to team up with the Red Cross not only to give the children of the community an extra incentive to help raise money and contribute to the campaign, but to be able to give back to our own community that suffers daily with traumatic live change disasters.” The class that raises the most money in each participating school will receive pizza party compliments of Domino’s.

West Chatham Middle School hosted the kick off ceremony as they have held the winning title for the past 6 years! In 2015, Savannah Early College, Garrison, and White Bluff Elementary were also the top winners in the district. The campaign was extremely successful last year; over $15,000 was raised to support those families in need.

Dr. Fields said, “We always appreciate the support and excitement generated by this campaign and also for Domino’s who partner with the American Red Cross each year.  Many people in our community will be helped through their efforts.”
