STEM Academy Student wins Annual Chatham County Spelling Bee!

On Monday, February 2, 2016, students, parents, principals, district officials and members of the community gathered at the Savannah State Student Union Building to see students compete for the honor of being named the next Chatham County Spelling Bee Champion.  The event was filled with anticipation and excitement as 40 of Savannah-Chatham’s top spellers took the stage for the annual Chatham County Spelling Bee hosted by the Chatham Association of Educators.

Students from area public schools had been competing for months at their schools for the honor to be the representative at the County event.  After several rounds of spelling words like “esplanade” and “triumvirate” the field was narrowed down to the final three spellers and soon after the spell-off between the final two began.

In the end, it was the word “accommodate” that was correctly spelled to officially name the Chatham County champ.  Catherine Nguyen from the STEM Academy at Bartlett Middle walked away with the title for the second time.

The top three students named in the Chatham County Spelling Bee include:

1st Place: Catherine Nguyen, The STEM Academy at Bartlett

2nd Place: Catherine Knight, Coastal Middle

3nd Place:  Aiden Maxwell, Howard Elementary
