Announcements: May Howard Elementary School Groundbreaking Ceremony

May Howard Elementary School Groundbreaking Ceremony

In a recent groundbreaking ceremony, the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System marked the official start of construction for the new May Howard Elementary school.  The ESPLOST II funded project provides for the design and construction of a new elementary school to accommodate 750 students.

The facility will be constructed on the existing site and will replace the current building. It will be approximately 106,000 square feet in size and will house 46 classrooms; an art room; a music room; a computer lab; media center; and a gymnasium.

Some of the students from May Howard Elementary were very instrumental in the program as they led the Pledge of Allegiance, recited poetry, and serenaded the audience through song. Mrs. Lesley Taylor, principal, shared how excited she was to begin this new journey with the school. District 4 School Board Representative, Mr. Shawn A. Kachmar, school Board President, Ms. Jolene Byrne, and Superintendent Dr. Thomas B. Lockamy, Jr. all shared their heartfelt sentiments about this momentous occasion.

Dr. John Howard, grandson, and Dr. Julie Howard, great-grand daughter of May DuBignon Howard, were there to witness the groundbreaking ceremony. The new school is projected to be ready for its students in fall 2017.
