Georgia Standards of Excellence (GSE)

From school to the world:  All students prepared for productive futures.  The vision of the Savannah-Chatham school district is reflected in the English/Language Arts curriculum and newly adopted Georgia Standards of Excellence (GSE).  Building to “anchor standards,” the GSE defines what is needed to be college and career ready.  Students entering the workforce or post-secondary education will have mastered skills in the following areas:

  • Analysis of literary and informational text
  • Narrative, informational, and argumentative writing
  • Speaking and listening
  • Language and vocabulary

Key Instructional Shifts

The adoption and implementation of the Common Core Georgia Performance Standards in 2011 marked some significant shifts that are still reflected in our current Georgia Standards of Excellence.  The first is the building of knowledge through content –rich informational texts.  In the past, our standards placed a much stronger emphasis on literary text.  As students enter careers and college, however, they are confronted with much more informational text.  Therefore, students read a true balance of literary and informational texts in their classes.  Our new standards require a balance between literary and informational text.  They also require students to gain information and understanding through independent and guided reading of informational texts.

 Another key shift involves students practicing reading skills with “complex texts.”  Often times, students may struggle reading text at their grade level.  In order to compensate this, teachers used text that matched the student’s ability for skills practice.  In order to meet the growing demand of post-high school reading, students must have ample opportunities to struggle with grade level text, applying learned skills to grade level material. 

 A final instructional shift requires students to provide evidence for ideas and arguments from both literary and informational texts.  Writing in the Georgia Performance Standards asked students to persuade an audience to agree with their position.  This usually involved emotional or logical pleas, but never included text.  Our current assessment system, Georgia Milestones, assess students’ ability to present an argument and provide evidence and support from a piece of text.  Textual evidence is a critical piece of speaking and writing.
