Disability Information

 

Asperger Syndrome is characterized by poor social interactions, obsessions, odd speech patterns, and other peculiar mannerisms. Children with AS often have few facial expressions and have difficulty reading the body language of others (link to Kids Health website).

 

Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder is a condition that can make it hard for a person to sit still, control behavior, and pay attention.  These difficulties usually begin before the person is 7 years old. However, these behaviors may not be noticed until the child is older (link to the National Dissemination Center for Children with Disabilities - NICHCY - website).

 

Autism Spectrum Disorders is a neurological disorder that affects a child’s ability to communicate, understand language, play, and relate to others. PDD represents a distinct category of developmental disabilities that share many of the same characteristics (link to the National Dissemination Center for Children with Disabilities - NICHCY - website).

 

Behavior Disorder refers to a group of behavioral and emotional problems in youngsters. Children and adolescents with this disorder have great difficulty following rules and behaving in a socially acceptable way.  Many factors may contribute to a child developing conduct disorder (link to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry website).

 

Bipolar Disorder or manic depression, is a medical illness that causes extreme shifts in mood, energy, and functioning.  Bipolar disorder is a chronic and generally life-long condition with recurring episodes of mania and depression that can last from days to months that often begin in adolescence or early adulthood, and occasionally even in children (link to the National Alliance on Mental Illness - NAMI - website).

 

Cerebral Palsy also known as CP— is a condition caused by injury to the parts of the brain that control our ability to use our muscles and bodies.  Cerebral means having to do with the brain. Palsy means weakness or problems with using the muscles.  CP can be mild, moderate, or severe (article from the National Dissemination Center for Children with Disabilities - NICHCY - website).

 

Deafness/Loss of Hearing is defined by the IDEA Act as “an impairment in hearing, whether permanent or fluctuating, that adversely affects a child’s educational performance.”  Deafness is defined as “a hearing impairment that is so severe that the child is impaired in processing linguistic information through hearing, with or without amplification" (link to the National Dissemination Center for Children with Disabilities - NICHCY - website).

 

Down Syndrome is the most common and readily identifiable chromosomal condition associated with mental retardation. It is caused by a chromosomal abnormality: (link to the National Dissemination Center for Children with Disabilities - NICHCY - website).

 

Emotional Disorder 

Many terms are used to describe emotional, behavioral, or mental disorders. Currently, students with such conditions are categorized as having an emotional disturbance (link to the National Dissemination Center for Children with Disabilities - NICHCY - website).

 

Epilepsy/Seizure Disorder 

According to the Epilepsy Foundation of America, epilepsy is a physical condition that occurs when there is a sudden, brief change in how the brain works. When brain cells are not working properly, a person’s consciousness, movement, or actions may be altered for a short time. These physical changes are called epileptic seizures (link to the National Dissemination Center for Children with Disabilities - NICHCY - website).

 

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders 

When a pregnant woman drinks alcohol, so does her unborn baby.  Prenatal exposure to alcohol can cause a range of disorders, known as fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs). One of the most severe effects of drinking during pregnancy is fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) (link to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention - CDC).

 

Fragile X Syndrome 

Fragile X is a family of genetic conditions, which can impact individuals and families in various ways.  Fragile X Syndrome (FXS) is the most common cause of inherited mental impairment. This impairment can range from learning disabilities to more severe cognitive or intellectual disabilities (link to the National Fragile X Foundation website).

 

Intellectual Disability 

Intellectual disability is a term used when a person has certain limitations in mental functioning and in skills such as communicating, taking care of him or herself, and social skills. These limitations will cause a child to learn and develop more slowly than a typical child (link to the National Dissemination Center for Children with Disabilities - NICHCY - website).

 

Learning Disability 

Learning disability is a general term that describes specific kinds of learning problems. A learning disability can cause a person to have trouble learning and using certain skills. The skills most often affected are: reading, writing, listening, speaking, reasoning, and doing math (link to the National Dissemination Center for Children with Disabilities - NICHCY - website).

 

Pervasive Developmental Delay (PDD) 

The term Pervasive Developmental Disorders was first used in the 1980s to describe a class of disorders. This class of disorders has in common the following characteristics: impairments in social interaction, imaginative activity, verbal and nonverbal communication skills, and a limited number of interests and activities that tend to be repetitive (article from the National Dissemination Center for Children with Disabilities - NICHCY).

 

Prader-Willi Syndrome 

Prader-Willi Syndrome is a disorder of chromosome 15.  Some of the syndrome’s major characters include: cognitive impairment, difficult behaviors and morbid obesity.  Compulsive eating and obsession with food usually begin before age 6 years (link to the USA Prader-Willi Syndrome Association website).

 

Reading and Learning Disabilities 

Millions of people in the United States have trouble reading. Some may not be able to read at all, while others have basic reading skills but might be considered “slow readers.” It is useful to know that problems with reading are often accompanied by problems with writing, listening, or speaking (article from the National Dissemination Center for Children with Disabilities - NICHCY).

 

Severe Intellectual Disabilities/Multiple Disabilities

People with severe disabilities are those who traditionally have been labeled as having severe or profound intellectual disabilities. These people require ongoing extensive support in more than one major life activity in order to participate in integrated community settings and enjoy the quality of life available to people with fewer or no disabilities (link to the National Dissemination Center for Children with Disabilities - NICHCY - website).

 

Speech/Language Impairment 

Speech and language disorders refer to problems in communication and related areas such as oral motor function. These delays and disorders range from simple sound substitutions to the inability to understand or use language or use the oral-motor mechanism for functional speech and feeding (link to the National Dissemination Center for Children with Disabilities - NICHCY - website).

 

Spina Bifida 

Spina Bifida means cleft spine, which is an incomplete closure in the spinal column.  Characteristics may include muscle weakness or paralysis below the area of the spine where the incomplete closure (or cleft) occurs, loss of sensation below the cleft, and loss of bowel and bladder control (link to the National Dissemination Center for Children with Disabilities - NICHCY - website).

 

Traumatic Brain Injury 

A traumatic brain injury (TBI) is an injury to the brain caused by the head being hit by something or shaken violently.  This injury can change how the person acts, moves, and thinks. A traumatic brain injury can also change how a student learns and acts in school (link to the National Dissemination Center for Children with Disabilities - NICHCY - website).

 

Tourette Syndrome 

Tourette Syndrome (TS) is a neurological disorder characterized by repetitive, stereotyped, involuntary movements and vocalizations called tics.  Some of the more common simple tics include eye blinking and other vision irregularities, facial grimacing, shoulder shrugging, and head or shoulder jerking (link to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke).

 

Visual Impairment 

The terms partially sighted, low vision, legally blind, and totally blind are used in the educational context to describe students with visual impairments.  Visual impairment is the consequence of a functional loss of vision, rather than the eye disorder itself (link to the National Dissemination Center for Children with Disabilities - NICHCY - website)
