ASSESSMENT
House Bill 229: (Student Health and Physical Education Act) April 28, 2009. Part of this act requires all students enrolled in a physical education course in grades 1-12 to have an annual fitness assessment beginning during the 2011-2012 school year. The fitness assessment and data collection procedures will be the responsibility of the Department of Education

GRADING
A. Kindergarten
The following final grades will be based on mastery of standards at the end of the school year and will be noted on the report card:
S= Satisfactory
N= Needs Improvement
U= Unsatisfactory
B. Grades 1-5
Letter grades will be used for Art, Music, Band, PE, Computer and Foreign Language:
E = Excellent Progress
S = Satisfactory Progress
N = Needs Improvement
U = Unsatisfactory Progress, Failing
I = Incomplete Work for the grade level.
Computation of Grades
The following will serve as the basis for grading progress in all subjects:
1. Class assignments, projects, group participation, make-up work, and extra credit work will constitute 40% of the grade. Homework is assigned as an extension of classroom instruction for further practice of skills and application and will constitute 10% of the grade.
2. Student assessment activities including oral tests, teacher-made tests, nine-week tests, term papers, teacher observation, and research should constitute 50% of the grade.
C. Grades 6-8
The following grading scale will be used to report student achievement in the school subjects:
90 -100 = A
80 - 89 = B
70 - 79 = C
0 – 69 = F
Computation of Grades
Teachers will calculate the grades for each of the following components to determine a numerical grade:
1. Class assignments, homework assignments, group participation, make-up work, and extra credit work should constitute 40% of the grade.
2. Student assessment activities including oral tests, teacher-made tests, nine-weeks tests, term papers, and research should constitute 60% of the grade.
D. Grades 9-12
The following grading scales will be used to report student achievement in the school subjects:
90 -100 = A (4 points)
80 - 89 = B (3 points)
70 - 79 = C (2 points)
0 – 69 = F (0 points)
Computation of High School Grades
Teachers will calculate the grades for each of the following components to determine a numerical grade:
1. Class assignments, homework assignments, group participation, including make-up and extra credit work should constitute 40% of the grade.
2. Student assessment activities including oral tests, teacher-made tests, nine-weeks tests, semester tests, term papers, and research, should constitute 60% of the grade.
3. Courses which have mandated state end-of-course exams will include the exam score as 15% of the final grade.
GRADUATION
One unit of credit in health and physical education is required. Students shall combine one-half or one-third units of credit of Health (17.011), Health and Personal Fitness (36.051), or Advanced Personal Fitness (36.061) to satisfy this requirement.
STATE STANDARDS
The state has developed its own standards for physical education, with which all school districts must comply.
