What are Career Pathways?

Savannah-Chatham County Schools are initiating Career Pathways to help its students, schools, and economy succeed. "Career Pathways" is a term for a student-centered, demand-driven innovation launched to proactively adapt to the dynamically changing needs of students and employers. Career Pathways focus on easing the transitions for all students across the educational continuum from high school to postsecondary education and/or employment.

Career Pathways are a series of related courses and experiences designed to provide rigorous academic and technical content with seamless transitions for every high school student to obtain college and career success, which may include skills, certificates, or articulated college credit. Career Pathways help students connect success in the classroom with success in life, and once this happen, the possibilities are endless:

  • Students experience education as a tool to build their future
  • Motivated students create energized learning communities
  • Effective learning communities increasingly release well-prepared graduates into the workplace where they deliver a powerful stimulus to the economy, which benefits every Savannah resident

How Can Choosing a Career Pathway Help Students?

Deciding on a career pathway can help a student prepare for the future. The intent is not to decide on a specific occupation, but to select a career pathway in which one can begin directing his or her energies. Identifying a career pathway can help in selecting school courses, activities, and part-time employment as well as work-based learning opportunities. Career Pathways also:

  • Increase the number of students accessing postsecondary education
  • Increase the number of students who persist in attaining degrees and other credentials
  • Decrease the need for remediation at the postsecondary level
  • Increase entry into employment and further education
  • Increase wage gain over time for student completers

In the pages that follow, you will see Career Pathways that are available to students and how they will create education success across Savannah. For example, a student that has chosen the Small Business Development Career Pathway must take the following courses to complete a pathway:

Small Business Development Career Pathway:

  1. Business Essentials
  2. Legal Environment of Business
  3. Entrepreneurial Ventures
