American History School – Students at all grade levels are exposed to accelerated learning models focused on American history. History topics are integrated into the literacy program through primary source documents, biographies, historical fiction, and non-fiction.  The program infuses “living history” into the curriculum, through historic re-enactors and community experiences.

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) – The AVID Program is a college-preparatory program designed to assist economically disadvantaged and academically average students in strengthening their study habits, critical thinking, time management and organizational skills. 


Core Knowledge / Advanced Learning – The Core Knowledge / Advanced Learning Schools emphasize a curriculum developed by Dr. E.D. Hirsch, Jr., which takes students grade by grade through specific content in core subjects and the fine arts.


Dedicated School – A specialized school that is open to all eligible students within the district..


Engineering – The School of Engineering provides students with experience in design and technology, along with the reinforcement of math and science concepts.


Fine / Performing Arts – The Schools of Visual and Performing Arts design creative instructional activities for students in music, dance, theatre, communications, and the visual arts. The creative talents and expressive personalities of students are utilized to develop excellence in individual and ensemble performances.


Gender Specific (All Male / All Female) – The gender specific programs provide rigorous instruction in an all female or all male setting, allowing students to increase their focus on academics within the learning environment.


International Baccalaureate (IB) – The International Baccalaureate Programmes develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. They provide challenging programs of international education and rigorous assessment, with the potential awarding of the prestigious IB Diploma after the senior year.


Law / Criminal Justice – The School of Law and Criminal Justice provides an exciting study of the American legal system and explores a wide range of career-related opportunities. Students explore careers such as attorney, police officer, forensic specialist, marine patrol officer, court reporter, federal officer (FBI, Secret Service, DEA), paralegal and many more.


Liberal Studies – The School of Liberal Studies allows students to pursue learning in multiple disciplines and to develop professional skills through career pathways.  Languages, literature, history, philosophy, mathematics, science and humanities are explored.


Mass Communication – The School of Mass Communication provides students with advanced learning opportunities within the fields of graphic design, journalism, and information technology.


Math, Technology & Design – The School of Math, Technology & Design provides students with accelerated academic instruction in mathematics and utilizes advanced technology and a design laboratory for production of a variety of student media.


Medical / Health Professions – The School of Medical and Allied Health Professions provides learning opportunities related to the fields of medicine and scientific research. Students have extensive experiences with health professionals from a variety of healthcare specialty areas.

Micro-Society Neighborhood School –  The Micro-Society model is a hands-on learning program that enables students to apply classroom skills in real-life ways. Its philosophy acknowledges that students learn best when they connect schoolwork with the outside world. The following core principles guide the program: promoting student voice and choice, enabling students to learn by doing, taking advantage of students’ entrepreneurial spirit, providing real-world experiences, enabling teachers to serve as facilitators, sharing responsibility and authority among teachers and students, and engaging community partners as contributors to the program.

Montessori – The Montessori Schools promote the philosophy and teaching methods of Dr. Maria Montessori, which are designed to maintain a balance between freedom and structure in the learning experience. The classroom is structured in a way that will cultivate the child’s own natural desire to learn.


Neighborhood School – A school which serves students in its designated attendance zone.


Open Enrollment –  A Neighborhood School that may accept students from outside its attendance zone.


Renzulli Enrichment – The Renzulli Program follows the Enrichment  Model developed by Dr. Joseph Renzulli and Dr. Sally Reiss. This model encourages advanced learning and creative productivity by exposing students to enrichment clusters designed around students interest.  Enrichment examples are performing arts (spoken word poetry, step, bluegrass band), technology (webpage design, aviation), and recreational sports (chess, golf).  Community members and business partners pair with the school to offer expertise and instruction in these clusters weekly.


Risers’ Academy - The Risers’ Academy for Young Men is a gender- specific program at Hubert Middle School.  Academy classes are small with an initial student/teacher ratio of below 15:1. The Risers Academy is grounded in the belief that education is liberation and will hold high an expectation of excellence. The environment promotes values that instill self-determination, strong character development, and service.  The program upholds a core commitment that parents, family and community are critical in the education of children.

Small Learning Communities (SLC’s) -   Small schools within a larger high school that are each focused on a theme such as business, health, arts, or advanced classes. Within each theme there are many Pathways a student may choose.  As an alternative to a large, impersonal high school that offers just one course of study, SLCs create a learning environment where all students receive individual attention and personalized instruction in their particular area of interest. SLCs are characterized by choice: students select an SLC based on their own interests, by preparation for post-secondary education, by personalization, by real-world application, and by guidance and support provided by teachers, mentors, tutors and counselors.

Traditional Learning -
The Traditional Learning School offers an enriched and highly structured curriculum that develops intellectual skills and concepts for strong academic achievement.  Emphasis is placed on citizenship and American heritage to help students develop an appreciation for the principles of democracy and the contributions of others in history.
