Assessment Updates for SY 2017-18

SY 2017-18 has brought some exciting changes to our district!
We have implemented a Balanced Literacy initiative for grades K-5, along with Eureka math, the most widely used math curriculum in the United States.  To go along with our initiatives for reading and math, we have made changes to our local assessment tools.

These assessments are given in grades K-8 at the beginning, middle, and end of each school year in order to track students’ progress over time. For the past several years, we have used the DIBELS and mCLASS math to assess early reading and math skills for our Kindergarten and 1st grade students; the Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) to assess reading in grades 2-8, and the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) to assess math in grades 2-8.

For SY 2017-18, we have replaced the DIBELS, mCLASS math, and SRI assessment tools and will instead use MAP to assess both Reading and Math for students in grades K-8.  This offers a number of benefits, as listed below:

·       Simplifies the assessment process for teachers and students

·       Provides a consistent measure to track student progress from K through 8

·       Provides individual student growth targets

·       Provides multiple ways to look at student performance, including RIT scores, Lexile scores for reading, comparisons to students across the nation, and predicted GMAS performance for students in grades 3 and higher

·       Provides information on students’ areas of strength and weakness in both reading and math, along with resources that help teachers identify specific skills to target based on the individual student’s needs

We are very excited about all the positive changes that will help our students achieve academic growth and success!  If you would like to learn more about MAP, be sure to visit NWEA's MAP Parent Toolkit!
