Reading on Grade Level Executive Summary 2009

About Reading on Grade Level

It is the goal of Savannah Chatham County Public Schools to increase the number of students reading on grade level by the end of second grade. A Lexile measure of reading ability was produced for every student who received a Reading scale score on the Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests (CRCT). SCCPSS analyzed Lexiles for the first time at the end of the 2008-2009 school year. It is our goal to have all second grade students reading at a Lexile level of 330 or higher by the end of second grade by year 2012. The level of 330L was determined by taking the average between the 25th and 50th percentile from the Lexile measures from the spring 2009 Georgia CRCT scores for all second graders. During the 2008-2009 school year, 62% of all second grade students were reading on grade level based on the Lexile score of 330L.

To provide a context for understanding the relationship between Lexiles and the state’s tests, the Georgia Department of Education has partnered with MetaMetrics, the developers of the Lexile Framework to align the CRCT scores to Lexile levels. Lexile measures associated with CRCT scores provide information on typical reader ability by grade level with typical text demands for each grade level.

The Lexile Framework for Reading© is an educational tool that links text and readers using a common metric known as the Lexile. A Lexile is a standard score that matches a student’s reading ability with the difficulty of text material. Students in grades 1-12 typically score in a range from Beginning Reader (BR) to 1700L in high school. Books within 50 points above the student’s Lexile score will provide a motivating challenge without frustration; books within 100 points below the student’s Lexile score will be easy to understand and provide excellent leisure and content area reading. More information on Lexile scores can be found at www.Lexile.com.

Highlights from 2008-2009 Reading on Grade Level Include:

  • 62% of 2nd grade students met the target Lexile measure of 330L
  • Schools achieving the goal of 330L ranged from 33% to 87%
  • Comparative data will be available after the 2009-2010 school year
