Oatland Island Renovations
In a 4.2 million dollar ESPLOST funded renovation, the Oatland Island Wildlife Center was upgraded with improved facilities construction that offers the students and members of this community an amazing educational wildlife center. On March 5, 2011 many were on hand to celebrate the completion of the renovation project during an official ribbon cutting ceremony. The Oatland Island Wildlife Center’s main building was constructed in 1927 as a retirement home for the International Order of Railroad Conductors. SCCPSS has been using the property as an environmental education center for students and the general public for the past 37 years. Each year over 25,000 students visit the Oatland Island Wildlife Center and participate in one of the more than 30 programs the center has to offer. An additional 40,000-50,000 visitors from the general public walk the trails and attend Oatland’s many festivals and special events each year.
