In June of 2011, members of the community, students, parents, elected officials, school Board members and SCCPSS faculty and staff, all gathered in a groundbreaking ceremony that would mark the start of a new chapter for the Oglethorpe Charter School. In a ceremony that included a performance by an SCCPSS Drill and ROTC team, along with the singing of the national anthem by the Oglethorpe Charter Chorus, the start of construction for the new Oglethorpe Charter was set to begin.
The new multi-million dollar ESPLOST funded project will provide more than 100,000 square feet of space for students and faculty. The facility will house 37 new instructional units to include classrooms, computer labs, science labs, band and chorus classrooms, a media center, gymnasium, auditorium, cafeteria, and a technology lab. Also included is an outdoor playfield.
Oglethorpe Charter School is a start-up charter school, the first start-up charter middle school in the state of Georgia. The school was founded in August of 1999 and as of September 2011, has entered its 13th year of teaching and learning.
