Instructional Support Person of the Year
Mrs. Jeanie S. Rivers
I began working at the STEM Academy in January 2015 with a total of 6 years experience. I jumped into action after the school had been without a Head Custodian since October 2014. My first order of business was to get the school to a functional state so the teachers and staff could focus on our students. This overhaul took place inside and outside of the school. The school grounds were in disarray due to recent ongoing construction. After a fresh start I noticed that the custodial department did not have a flowing work schedule. After implementing a new schedule, I also incorporated best practices for planning work duties so my staff was able to complete their work effectively.
Recycling has always been important to me because I feel like every little bit helps when everyone is doing their part. During our initial cleanup of the school I noticed an excessive waste Of paper among students and staff. Despite the waste, the school as a whole held an attitude of environmental concern. After all, what's more STEM than recycling? Students and staff wanted to decrease their impact on the environment, but lacked the resources. I began by strategically placing old boxes around the school to encourage them to recycle things like paper, plastic bottles, cardboard, etc. Soon the good habit caught on and the boxes were over flowing!
Caraustar Recycling Services has been working with me at other sites, offering free pickup and can placement for years. They noticed our demand at STEM and came through with not only the larger cans for daily dumping but also the typical smaller blue cans for every classroom. Having the resources to safely get rid of our waste really brought STEM to its full recycling potential and everyone has been very happy with the outcome of my initiative.
