 What's Going on in Gifted?

O.R.E.O. Project

This year, our 5th graders participated in the O.R.E.O. Project, put together by Jen Wagner in Southern California.  Over 1,000 schools in the United States, as well as around the world, participate in this scientific math-based inquiry.

The project begins with students posing an inquiry question:  How many Oreos can we stack before they tumble?  Next, they hypothesized how many cookies they could stack without the cookies tumbling.  The students tried to create the tallest tower they could.  Once, the stacking is done, the students analyzed the data that was collected.  They found the mean, median, mode and range for the data.

The students used this project to:

  • Ask a question
  • Do background research
  • Construct a hypothesis
  • Test their hypothesis by doing an experiment
  • Analyze their data and draw a conclusion
  • Communicate their results
  • AND eat lots of cookies!!
