Darnell Blackshear
Hubert Middle School

Darnell Blackshear is a paraprofessional at Hubert Middle School. He joined the Savannah Chatham County Public School System (SCCPSS) in 2006. His greatest contributions to the role as a support person in education are providing assistance to students who face academic challenges by making sure accommodations and modifications are met for students with exceptional needs, so they can grow academically. Darnell has assisted in instructional planning by searching for materials and resources that are grade level appropriate that address the academic needs of all students to ensure academic growth. Darnell has grown in his role as a paraprofessional through professional development. He has participated in trainings and workshops to ensure he continue to grow in the education profession.

In 2005, Darnell graduated from Savannah State University with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Computer Information System. He received an award from Association of Information Technology Professional for leadership. In that year, Darnell became CompTia certified in A+ and Network+. In 2009, Darnell graduated from Armstrong Atlantic State University with a Masters of Education in Adult Education. Darnell is a member and representative for Savannah Federation of Teachers.

In addition to his role as a paraprofessional in SCCPSS, Darnell was hired in 2015 as a Development Disability Specialist for Coastal Home Care on a part-time basis. His responsibility is to provide assistant with daily living to adults with exceptional needs. To ensure success of the program, Darnell is responsible for the planning of daily activities for his client, maintain accurate documentation, and take on the leadership role to ensure the success of the staff.

Darnell strengthened public education by integrating students with exceptional needs into the regular educational program by building accommodative learning and social opportunities for students with exceptional needs in regular education programs. Also, he has assisted in the use of educational technology that help all students to improve their academic skills in reading and math. He has worked with students in after school program such as 21st Century to ensure academic success.

Darnell has provided effective support to increase academic achievement for students by leading small instruction designed by the teacher, facilitating positive interactions between students, and gathering materials that promote positive learning environment. He has built relationship with classroom teachers because it is the key element to success for students in any learning environment. Darnell spends time with teachers in meetings to collaborate on lessons, solving problems, providing academic reinforcement, and to provide encouragement and motivation to students who are struggling academically.
