The Risers’ Academy for Young Men
The Risers Academy for Young Men is a gender-specific specialty program at Hubert Middle School. Smaller class sizes with a student/teacher ratio of 18:1 offer every young man a supportive and engaging learning environment where they can experience success. The Risers Academy is grounded in the belief that education is liberation and staff hold high the expectation that students will bring their unique assets and learning styles to the classroom that become building blocks for their learning and development.
The Academy program follows Common Core and Georgia state standards, infusing group work, concept-based teaching, and project-based learning to involve students in the content and process of learning. The environment encourages students to tackle challenging material and become better thinkers, readers, writers and speakers.
The Risers Academy promotes values that instill self-determination, strong character development, and service to the community. Riser students participate in activities throughout the year to become more aware of the needs in their community and to develop themselves as leaders. Parents, families and community members are core partners in the Academy program and their involvement is critical in helping each young man reach his full potential.
The program operates on an extended-day schedule throughout the year to allow extra time for students to participate in tutorials, mentoring and enrichment activities that are offered at school and throughout the Savannah community.
Currently, the Academy is developing its own interdisciplinary, thematic curriculum focused on International Trade and Entrepreneurship, which will support the program in achieving its vision that, “Every Riser is gainfully equipped with the knowledge and skills to become a productive global citizen.”
