Field Trip Reminders!

    • Starting LocationAll programs begin at the Massie Heritage Center on the corner of Abercorn and East Gordon streets.  (The one exception is the Laurel Grove Cemetery program.) Bus drivers should stop in front of the historic Massie School building on East Gordon Street where students will disembark, OR our guide will board the bus there and travel with the students to the starting point for their program in downtown Savannah.

    • Teachers/Chaperones – While we hope that you have a fun and memorable field trip to Massie, please remember that our school group programs are an extension of the classroom.  All teachers and paraprofessionals are admitted at no charge, and are expected to assist with their group with safety and supervision at all times. All parents will be charged the student group rate of $6.00 and their numbers may be limited depending on the overall group size. We also ask that parents do not bring students’ siblings with them, so that we can focus on the students instead.

    • Walking Downtown – When students are walking in downtown Savannah, please prepare them to be mindful when crossing streets and to walk to the right, two by two.  We discourage the use of strollers on our tours.  Also, please remind your students to respect Savannah’s Historic District, its residents, and their property.  The city should be left better than they found it.  Remember, sidewalks can be uneven, so please don’t forget your field trip first aid kit.

    • Lunch – If you are planning lunch before or after your visit to Massie, we recommend utilizing Forsyth Park, only two blocks from Massie, which has benches, a playground, and restrooms.  Bus parking is available in the lot off Drayton Street near the concert stage inside the park.  You should bring extra trash bags and blankets.  Due to limited space, we will not be able to store lunches inside Massie.  Calhoun Square across from Massie may accommodate small groups.

    • Gift Shop and Restrooms – Massie has a small gift shop and restrooms on site.  Please plan your itinerary so that your students will have time to browse the gift shop and use the restrooms. This year we also offer you the option of pre-ordering student gift bags to be ready upon your arrival to Massie.  They are available for either $3.00 or $5.00 each.

    • Cancellations/ Inclement Weather --Many of Massie’s programs require scheduling extra personnel.  Therefore, we require at least two weeks notification for cancellations so that we can adjust our work schedule accordingly.  Last minute cancellations can be very costly for a non-profit organization such as Massie.  Also, all of our programs, except Laurel Grove cemetery, can be conducted indoors in the event of inclement weather.
