May Day 2017

Massie Heritage Center Celebrates May Day 2017

In a tradition that dates back one hundred sixty years, students in the Savannah-Chatham Public School System celebrated May Day in Calhoun Square on Friday, May 1st.

Massie Heritage Center sponsors this event for students each year.  This year approximately one thousand students representing ten schools participated.  The mistress of ceremonies for the event was Ms. Kim Gusby of WSAV TV.  She has presided at this event for over ten years.

Students at the various schools danced various traditional folk dances including the May Pole Dance, the La Raspa (Mexican Hat Dance), the Mayim (an Israeli folk dance, the Circassian Circle (a folk dance used in several European countries), the Irish Potpourri (the Irish Washerwoman jig), the Virginia Reel (an English country dance), the Bele Kawe (a traditional African-Caribbean folk dance) , and the Cotton-Eyed Joe (a traditional American country folk dance),

Refreshments for the students were provided by Wesley Monumental United Methodist Church.
