Instructional Support Person of the Year - Barbara Oliver

I have been employed at May Howard Elementary since March 1984 and absolutely love working at this school. I started as a 3rd grade paraprofessional when May Howard only had grades K-3rd and truly loved working in the classroom with teachers and students. During this time period as the school begin to grow I also started working with 1st and 2nd grade classes. In August 1988, my position changed and I transitioned to Secretary II position when Tybee Elementary closed. After the retirement of Ann Leon, then lead secretary, my position changed once again to Secretary I, now entitled Administrative Secretary.
I miss seeing and working with the students in the classroom but quickly adapted to learning and loving all the students at the school. My favorite saying is, "I now get to see and love everybody because they all must come through the office before they’re assigned a classroom and teacher."
I enjoy working with our faculty and staff members and have worked with many teachers and administrators through the years. I count it a joy to have worked here for over thirty years and I truly love seeing former students return as both teachers and parents. I love watching the facial expressions of the students when I say to them that I knew their parent(s) when they were their age. The smile is infectious. May Howard is a great school to work at and truly sets excellent foundations for learning. The entire faculty and staff work together as family- not just employees.
