What is Dual Enrollment?

Dual Enrollment is a program that provides funding for students enrolled at a participating, eligible public or private high school, or home study program in Georgia to take approved college-level coursework at a participating, eligible postsecondary institution in Georgia. Dual Enrollment students take approved postsecondary coursework (up to 15 hours/semester or 12 hours/quarter) for credit towards both high school graduation requirements or home study completion and postsecondary requirements.

In simple terms, Dual Enrollment is an amazing opportunity  to "jump start" your post secondary education/training by earning college credit at little or no cost to you while still in high school (think: save $$ on college)--and it does not reduce the number of HOPE hours available to you upon graduation. Please note that ALL classes--pass or fail--will be added to the student's transcript and calculated into the student's GPA.

Will I need to apply? What are the requirements? Which test scores will I need to apply?

Glad you asked! Yes, you will need to meet the admission requirements and apply to the post secondary institution at which you plan to take classes. Each institution has their own admission requirements for dual enrollment, so be sure to check their website. You can apply using the application found on-line at each college/universities website or through your GAfutures account at by clicking on the "College Planning" tab at the top of their webpage. Be sure to indicate on the application that you are applying as a "Dual Enrolled" student (NOT an incoming Freshmen). You will also need to use your GAfutures account to request that your transcript be electronically sent to the school(s) to which you are applying.  The test score(s) you will need to submit depends on to which school(s) you are applying.

* Students who wish to dual enroll at a participating University (i.e. Georgia Southern, Point University off-campus site only; or Savannah State) must have an acceptable SAT or ACT score to apply. Juniors interested in participating in dual enrollment their senior year, it is recommended that you take the test early second semester of your junior year. Be sure to  specify schools to have your scores automatically sent by the College Board (SAT) or ACT when registering on-line for the test(s).

* Students who wish to apply to a Technical College (i.e. Savannah Tech, Ogeechee Tech, East Georgia State) must have an acceptable SAT or ACT test score OR take the ACCUPLACER test given at Savannah Tech or Ogeechee Tech.  See your counselor for the testing referral form you must present at the testing center to take the test free before you go to Savannah Tech. I want to participate in Dual Enrollment. Now what do I do?

First, talk with Mrs. Barton, NHHS Lead Counselor and Dual Enrollment Coordinator, in the Counseling Suite, Room 1005 to discuss your readiness to dual enroll.  If you and your parent(s) believe Dual Enrollment is a good fit for you, all of you will need to meet with Mrs. Barton to complete some required forms and review expectations before you meet with the university or college you want to attend. You can email Mrs. Barton to request an appointment at or call 912-395-6794.
