Why do we need a Wish List?

While our animals are always well cared for and provided with enrichment, it is important to "change it up" so to speak - to continually provide novel items for the animals so the enrichment program does not become boring or routine. This can potentially be an expensive undertaking, especially for toys. Toys tough enough to withstand a cougar's play do not come cheap! This is where supporters like you come in - your purchase from one of our Wish List programs helps us provide new and exciting forms of enrichment for the animals in our care.

What is enrichment?

The Association of Zoos and Aquariums defines enrichment as "a dynamic process for enhancing animal environments within the context of the animals' behavioral biology and natural history. Environmental changes are made with the goal of increasing the animal's behavioral choices and drawing out their species-appropriate behaviors, thus enhancing animal welfare." Essentially, we want to keep our animals active and engaged in their environment.

 Enrichment in Action!

OIWC's Animal Care Wish Lists and programs are shopping lists made up of enrichment items needed to keep our animals happy and healthy. The lists also help our Animal Care and Veterinary staff with their day-to-day duties. Items on the lists range in price from free to over $100 - there's something for every budget!
