Announcements: Distance Learning, Meal Service, & Collecting Medication during school closure

Title

Distance Learning, Meal Service, & Collecting Medication during school closure

Body

Scholars, Governor Brian Kemp has placed Georgia under a State of Emergency due to the spread of Coronavirus. The school District continues to maintain regular contact with the Georgia Department of Public Health, Chatham County Health Department, and the Chatham Emergency Management Agency, to monitor Coronavirus impacts in our area. District staff have prepared for these conditions by making plans for the continuation of learning, meal service availability, and the cancelation of large group public events. DISTANCE LEARNING During the school closure mandated by the Governor in response to the spread of the Coronavirus, SCCPSS students should plan to engage in Independent Learning Days. This will ensure students are engaged in relevant, grade-appropriate learning opportunities while they are away from the classroom. Assignments will be posted via our school website and the district’s communication channels displayed at sccpss.com . Independent Learning: Choice Boards are being provided for all students to continue learning while out of school. Choice Board tasks focus on the 4 Core Content Areas (ELA/Reading, Math, Science, and Social Studies) as well as Georgia Standards of Excellence for each grade level. Tasks require few materials. In most cases only pencil and paper are needed. Students will be expected to turn in their completed Choice Board assignments within 5 days of the District’s return to school. This will allow students and parents an opportunity to ask any questions and receive teacher support if needed before final submission of assignments. MEAL SERVICE: SCCPSS will continue to offer meal service to students while schools are closed. Based on the exceptional circumstances relating to the declaration of a public health emergency due to COVID-19 by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is providing additional flexibilities in an effort to address concerns regarding the loss of meals for low-income children. SCCPSS Food and Nutrition staff have had their application for Meal Service During the Novel Coronavirus Outbreak approved by GaDOE and expect to begin serving meals to Savannah-Chatham students on Monday, March 23rd. Distribution sites have been identified based on federal guidelines. School Site locations where meals will be available and pick up times will be released later this week and posted to the District’s website. LARGE GROUP PUBLIC EVENTS: District Cancellations SCCPSS will follow the recommended guidelines from the Center for Disease Control as it relates to large group gatherings. This includes, but is not limited to, the cancellation of concerts, award ceremonies, proms, athletic competitions, and other school/district activities that would invite a large public gathering. Cancellations will be managed on a case by case scenario and proper notifications will be issued as soon as practical. COLLECTING MEDICATION Attention Parents: If your child has medication in one of our school clinics that you need to collect due to the closure, please call the District’s Lead Nurse at (912) 395-1263 or Risk Management Office at (912) 395-5576 to make arrangements for the medication to be returned to you. Be sure to check our website for more updates.
