We really want to see a great parent turn out this year at the Summit, PTA meeting and Teacher Tell All (All in One) meeting night. Please help us by sharing your opinion. We will go with what the majority of parents respond with.
See you there!
As principal of Southwest Elementary it is my pleasure to welcome you back from summer vacation. I am thrilled to return for my second year as the principal of the SWES Gators! Our staff has been working hard to prepare for a rewarding school year and we look forward to having our students back to fill our classroom with excitement and enthusiasm for learning!
What’s New? We welcome Dr. King to our faculty as our new Assistant Principal. I am sure she will continue to maintain the same high expectations for student behavior and achievement as Mrs. Prince had throughout her 8 years of dedication and support to our community. We are also delighted to welcome Executive Director, Dr. Vallerie Cave, who will oversee our school’s progress and goals from the district level as we strive to make Southwest Elementary one of the highest achieving elementary schools in the county.
We are excited to announce our 1st school wide theme: Super Gators: Learn Achieve Succeed
Attendance Hero: Here Everyday Ready On time
60% of our students missed 6 or more days of school last year. We need every child at school on time, every day, and all day.
• Students cannot be signed out after 3:15 p.m. School ends at 4:00 p.m. and every minute of instruction is important to your child’s success.
SWES Super Mathematicians will begin a new math program called Eureka Math PreK-5 this school year as part of a SCCPSS District Wide implementation. Parents can go to greatminds.org and sign up for a free parent account to have access to a lot of resources, videos and materials in order to provide additional support to your child at home.
SWES Super Readers and Writers will be a part of an exciting new Balanced Literacy framework that’s sweeping across our district and school. It will be implemented daily during a 90 minute literacy block. Children will take part in interactive read alouds, daily shared reading and writing experiences, engage in independent reading and writing activities and be a part of guided reading groups to support their individual levels and needs.
District Assessments: We are thrilled to begin using the NWEA MAP for Reading grades K-5 and will continue with the NWEA MAP Math adding grades K & 1 to the 2-5 testing windows already in place.
I look forward to seeing you at our Open House on August 2nd from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. If you have any questions please contact the office at 912-395-3301, view our school website at swes.sccpss.com or email me at Tara.Fitzgerald@sccpss.com.

Dear Gator Families,
What's happening at SWES?
GMAS: We are 44 school days away from students taking the GMAS.
Math Tutorials: Letters were sent home in November for math tutoring and this week additional students have been identified from the new MAP math assessment data. Teachers will send home additional invitations in grades 2-5 for math support. Tutoring is at 8:00 a.m. and children that are invited need to be on time and attend consistently.
Attendance is important. If you want your child to do well academically and reduce the risk of retention then your child must be in school. We want to see our students succeed and all research demonstrates the connection between attendance and school success. Please make sure your child is here all day.
Perfect Attendance Celebration: We have changed the date for our Perfect Attendance celebration to Thursday, February 2nd. Children with perfect attendance are in school all day. Per the Family Handbook being tardy or signed out early counts against perfect attendance. Invitations go home this Wednesday for our 60+ students with perfect attendance. The students will be treated to pizza and ice cream from The Ice Cream Stop and our business partner Mr. Michael Allen from Marco's Pizza will provide pizza during the celebration.
Do you know what a Gator Buck is? We have pretty amazing students at SWES who work hard academically and are positive role models for others. Friday's we pull 20 names from our Gator Buck Bin and those students come to the office for a fun incentive for being responsible, respectful and Great Gator role models! If a student is signed out early they miss this opportunity to earn an incentive. Children need to be in school if their name is called. Keep encouraging your child to do their best academically and with behavior choices each day.

SCCPSS schools are in session Monday and Tuesday, December 19th & 20th.
- Students can bring in $1 to purchase pickles and/or popcorn.
- If students have SWES spirit wear from last school year or the new shirts for this school year they can wear it with their uniform pants, skirts and shorts.
- Last day of the 2nd marking period.
SWES Parent Survey
Parents let us know how we can help our community to become more involved in school events and their children's educational experience here at SWES. We have over 800 students and this past week had only 25 parents attend the PTA meeting and 20 families attend the Moving On Up 5th grade transition event.
Click on the link provided and take 2 minutes to complete our anoynomou parent survey: https://goo.gl/forms/3cHYBnqhngEmuEGH2
Uniforms and Dress Code:
More and more students are coming to school without the appropriate attire for the dress code. Many students are missing belts and wearing hoodies.
- During the vacation break please take advantage of the many great sales and purchase your child belts, zip up jackets and any other items they need as we begin the second semester.
- Check your child's school supplies and make sure they have pencils, paper, colored pencils and glue sticks.
Students that are assigned math tutorials will not have tutorials on Monday and Tuesday December 19th & 20th. Tutorials will resume the week of January 9th.
Have a wonderful week and vacation!
