Announcements: Three Graduates of SCCPSS Hired by Savannah Fire & Emergency Services

Title

Three Graduates of SCCPSS Hired by Savannah Fire & Emergency Services

Body

Three graduates of SCCPSS will be among 29 Savannah Fire & Emergency Services recruits who will be certified firefighters on Friday, August 5, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Savannah Civic Center. Vincent Duray, Jonathan Gerbsch and Alfred Lloyd are the first Savannah Chatham County Public School students to apply and be hired by Savannah Fire to embark in the career of firefighting. The three are graduates of The Woodville Tompkins Technical Career Institute.

The Woodville Tompkins program is a joint effort between Savannah Fire & Emergency Services and the Savannah Chatham County Public Schools System. The program utilizes National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards and enables participating students to achieve graduation requirements by completing the career pathway program. It also serves as one of the recruitment tools utilized by Savannah Fire and Emergency Services.

DuRay, Gerbsch and Lloyd are the first graduates of the Woodville Tompkins program to have the opportunity to become Savannah firefighters. Each of the three had to compete on their own merits with all eligible applicants and pass written, physical and medical screenings to become members of the current class of SFES recruits.

SFES Chief Charles G. Middleton is especially proud of the partnership between the fire department and the public school system. He made special mention of the Woodville Tompkins program during his early meeting with the recruits. "This helps fulfill promises made to the school board that graduates of the program would be eligible to compete for open positions within the Savannah Fire Department," Middleton said.
