Firefighter Pathway
The Woodville Tompkins Firefighter Pathway is a joint effort between Savannah Fire & Emergency Services and the Savannah Chatham County Public Schools System. The program utilizes National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards and enables participating students to achieve graduation requirements by completing the career pathway program. It also serves as one of the recruitment tools utilized by Savannah Fire and Emergency Services.
Upon successful completion of this course, students will have received orientation and preparation for entry-level positions in the fire service, including the opportunity to sit for the Firefighter 1 National Professional Qualifications certification test. The use of the following equipment is required for effective learning: computer and live fire simulation, firefighting and personal protective equipment, and standard industry apparatus. Mastery of standards through project-based learning, technical skills practice, leadership development activities and Skills USA participation will provide students with a competitive edge for entry into fire and emergency services. In addition, the procedures and protocols used in this class are the most current recommendations of the International Association of Fire Chiefs and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).
The Applications of Firefighting course requires strenuous physical activity. Students, parents, and school officials are encouraged to review and discuss the physical requirements prior to the student's enrollment in the course. A student must obtain a sports physical prior to the start of course activities.
Homeland Security
The Woodville Tompkins Homeland Security Pathway is a joint effort between Savannah Fire & Emergency Services and the Savannah Chatham County Public Schools System.
This pathway examines homeland security and terrorism – domestically and internationally. The development of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security will be examined in the context of the global terrorist threat and the more general concept of homeland security. Emphasis is on the identification and understanding of appropriate definitions and concepts so that students may critically evaluate the threats present and the range of responses available in our democratic society. A basic overview of historical foundations will be examined. The relationship of homeland security to preparation and response and recovery mechanisms for terrorism, including goals, objectives, and strategies, will be explored. The importance of coordinating various plans and strategies among local, state, and federal government response organizations will be stressed. Great emphasis will be placed on contemporary case studies and interactive discussions. Students will review the roles and responsibilities of government agencies, non-government organizations, and individual citizens in homeland security.
CAREERS IN HOMELAND SECURITY: Students will learn about the broad range of occupations offered in the related fields of Homeland Security. Students will explore personal preferences and abilities to identify an occupational path. Students will evaluate requirements for their preferred career path as well as necessary post-secondary education.
